The First Steps: Analyzing Official Cybathlon 2024 Tasks

As our team prepares for the Cybathlon 2024, we have carefully studied the official tasks laid out for the competition. These tasks focus on assisting visually impaired individuals in overcoming everyday obstacles and enhancing their quality of life. In this article, we will provide an overview of these tasks and discuss our initial conclusions on how to approach them.

The ten official tasks for the Cybathlon 2024 are as follows:

  • Front Door
  • Colours
  • Road Work
  • Grocery
  • Sidewalk
  • Finder
  • Footpath
  • Serving Food
  • Touch Screen
  • Empty Seats

These tasks aim to address real-life challenges faced by visually impaired individuals, such as locating a specific doorbell, identifying colors, navigating obstacles at head height, shopping for groceries, detecting obstructions on sidewalks, finding misplaced objects, following a path without deviating, serving food without spilling, operating touch screens, and finding empty seats in public spaces.

After analyzing these tasks, our team has identified three main categories that require development in the first step: Navigation, Feedback to the Pilot, and Task-Specific Problems. Our approach involves designing innovative assistive technology solutions that will enable visually impaired individuals to navigate their surroundings confidently, receive essential feedback, and tackle the unique challenges posed by each task.
